Streets to Be Repaved With Recycled Tires
The city has won a $100,000 grant from the state Waste Management Board for a project to use recycled tires to pave streets.
The Public Works Department will use rubberized asphalt made of recycled tires to resurface 60 streets. The grant, awarded this month, is part of the waste management agency’s strategy to give cities incentives for recycling.
“By using rubberized asphalt instead of traditional asphalt products, we are helping to save valuable landfill space,” said Keith Jones, the city’s street division manager.
Jones said rubberized asphalt also is expected to last longer than regular asphalt.
The city will use the recycled material to pave streets west of Knott Avenue, south of Chapman Avenue and north of Garden Grove Boulevard. Officials estimated that about 9,000 tires will be recycled for the project. As a condition of the grant, the city must mail brochures to residents to educate them about recycling.
