Chevron Ordered to Pay in Lawsuit: The San Francisco-based oil company said a jury ordered it to pay at least $729 million to a unit of Occidental Petroleum Corp. in a case involving a 14-year-old breach of contract dispute. The verdict by a jury in Tulsa, Okla., calls for $228.9 million in compensatory damages and interest estimated at more than $500 million, Chevron said. The suit was originally filed in 1982 by Cities Service Co. against Gulf Oil Co. over Gulf’s termination of a plan to buy Cities. Chevron inherited responsibility for the suit when it purchased Gulf in 1984. Cities has also since been purchased by Occidental Petroleum. Chevron spokeswoman Alison Jones said the oil company planned to appeal. Los Angeles-based Oxy said it is confident the verdict would be upheld.
