51 Children Hurt in Bus Crash
At least 51 schoolchildren in northern England were injured Thursday when the bus they were traveling in crashed while trying to pass under a bridge that was too low, medical officials said.
They said 17 of the children suffered relatively serious injuries after the top half of the double-decker bus was ripped off in the crash near the town of Runcorn, about 170 miles northwest of London.
An official at the hospital where the children were taken said most of the injured were suffering from lacerations.
Other hospital officials said eight of the children would undergo operations later Thursday. Most of the injured were 10 or 11 years old.
