SACRAMENTO — A court hearing for Unabomber suspect Theodore Kaczynski, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed until September, court officials said Thursday.
Kaczynski was to have appeared for the first time before U.S. Judge Garland Burrell to discuss the progress of the case with prosecutors and his attorneys.
The hearing has been rescheduled for Sept. 20 at 9 a.m., court clerk Dan Weeks said.
The judge also agreed to appoint federal public defender Judy Clarke as co-counsel for Kaczynski along with the Sacramento federal public defender. Clarke, who is the federal public defender for eastern Washington and Idaho, gained prominence when she helped convince a South Carolina jury to spare Susan Smith’s life. Smith faced death penalty charges in the drownings of her two young sons in a lake near Union, S.C.
U.S. Atty. Charles Stevens said defense attorneys requested the delay to give them time to examine evidence before discussing a schedule for pretrial motions.
