PETALUMA--Step back in time at the fourth annual “Cruisin’ Into Summer” car show and celebration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 27. In addition to a display of about 200 classic and antique cars, there are pie-eating and Hula Hoop contests, classic rock ‘n’ roll, and more. Free. SAN BERNARDINO NATIONAL FOREST--Families explore and learn together at the Children’s Forest Family Day Camp, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. July 27. Enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, entertainment; demonstrations by forest researchers; and more. In addition, there are lessons/walks for families in orienteering, the sport of navigating, which uses a map and compass. $25 for a family of four (additional fees for bike or horse rentals.) BEAR VALLEY--Classical, folk, jazz, opera and more are staged at the Bear Valley Music Festival in the scenic Central Sierra, July 27-Aug. 11. Concerts by the Festival Orchestra, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Livingston Taylor, the Mamas and the Papas, and others are presented in the Festival Tent in Bear Valley Village. PALM SPRINGS--More than 150 films are slated for the second annual Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, July 31-Aug. 4. The shorts, by filmmakers from 28 nations, are in the animation, comedy, documentary, drama and experimental categories. SAN FRANCISCO--Original creations in a variety of media take center stage at the American Craft Council Craft Fair San Francisco, Aug. 2-4 in the Herbst and Festival Pavilions at Fort Mason Center.
