Grizzlies Jettison Scott to Make Room to Sign Free Agent Mayberry
The Vancouver Grizzlies waived former Laker Byron Scott on Monday to create room under the salary cap to sign free agent guard Lee Mayberry to a multiyear contract.
Scott, 35, is a 13-year veteran who was fourth on the Grizzlies in scoring last season at 10.2 points per game. He also averaged 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists and shot better than 40%, 33.5% from three-point range.
“We had to let Scott go. It’s really said,” Vancouver General Manager Stu Jackson said. “Byron’s been an outstanding player in this league, and I’m proud of the fact he wore a Grizzlies’ uniform.”
Mayberry, a first-round choice by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1992 NBA draft, averaged 5.2 points and 3.7 assists in 82 games last year and has not averaged more than 5.8 points in any season.
He played his college basketball at Arkansas.
Terms of Mayberry’s deal were not disclosed.
