The Baltimore Orioles placed reliever Arthur Rhodes (9-1), who won his first nine decisions this season, on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 14, and recalled pitcher Rick Krivda from Triple-A Rochester. Rhodes has an injured left shoulder.

Also, Manager Davey Johnson said all those around Brady Anderson would like the center fielder to have the appendectomy even his doctor says he needs. They would like him to avoid the additional risk he is taking by waiting, in the very slim hope his condition will improve.

“But I can’t sign and admit him [into the hospital],” Johnson said.

The Orioles may help make the decision easier for him: They may place him on the 15-day disabled list, giving him more reason to have the surgery that will sideline him for three to six weeks.
