Residents to Discuss Neighborhood Watch

The Westlake Joint Board of Homeowner Assns. will hold a public meeting Thursday to discuss Neighborhood Watch groups, including how to start and maintain one.

Senior Deputy Patti Dreyer of the Thousand Oaks Police Department’s Crime Prevention Bureau is expected to talk about an inter-neighborhood watch program, a coordinating council of Neighborhood Watch groups.

Strong Neighborhood Watch groups are important, Dreyer said, because they serve as extra eyes for crime prevention in residential areas.

“You can’t have a police officer on every street,” she said. “So we need people to watch for suspicious activity and to call us when they see something. A lot of people see things but don’t call us because they don’t want to bother the police. But we encourage them to report suspicious activity.”

The discussion will include how to recognize acts that should be reported, and tips on what to do during vacation periods.

The Westlake Joint Board is composed of 40 homeowner associations in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks, representing more than 7,500 homeowners.

The meeting will begin 7:30 p.m. Thursday at North Ranch Community Center, 1400 N. Westlake Blvd.
