Buddhist Obon Fest Honors Ancestors
Beginning Saturday, a Buddhist temple in Pacoima will sponsor an ancient festival that honors the spirits of departed ancestors, organizers have announced.
Known as obon, the joyous two-day event will take place under the direction of the Hongwanji Buddhist Temple at the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center, 12953 Branford St., Pacoima. The festival will feature kimono-clad dancers in traditional folk performances, games for adults and children, exhibits of bonsai trees, floral arrangements and Japanese dolls, a sushi bar and a variety of multicultural foods.
The annual Obon Festival is open to the public and will take place from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
