Olympic Visit: Some local gymnastics students will be rubbing elbows with Olympians next week, and they won’t have to go to Atlanta to do it. The Chinese gymnastics team is coming to Li-Ning’s International Gymnastics Academy in Chatsworth. . . . The athletes, including gold medal winner Li Xiaoshuang, will watch students perform. . . . Studio owner Li-Ning is a three-time gold medal winner himself.

Church Social: Mayor Richard Riordan will worship and speak at the Church at Rocky Peak in Chatsworth at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. No special agenda, apparently. And church administrators were clueless about why the mayor was coming to call. “We don’t really know why,” said a staffer. . . . But a mayoral spokesman says Riordan visits churches frequently.

Growing Pains: Think all the Valley grows is malls? It wasn’t always so, which is why the San Fernando Valley has an annual agricultural fair (B1). . . . Oranges were our chief crop, with up to 15,000 acres devoted to orange groves. Then people came in droves and there went the groves. The new suburbanites balked at the smell of fertilizer wafting by. Now, picking oranges means heading for the supermarket.
