Part-Time Rider Earns a Bronze

Kerry Millikin, one of the few riders with a job outside her sport, has something special to show her co-workers when she returns.

Millikin, a registered nurse from Westport, Mass., won the bronze medal in the equestrian three-day event in Conyers, Ga. She finished behind a pair of New Zealanders, gold medalist Blyth Tait and Sally Clark.

Tait and Clark went cleanly around the show-jumping course, while Millikin had one fence down on Out and About but held on for third.

Tait finished with 56.8 penalty points on Ready Teddy, followed by Clark with 60.4 penalties on Squirrel Hill. Millikin finished with 73.7 penalties. One more jump down would have giving the bronze to France’s Jean Teulere, who finished with 77.2 aboard Rodosto.

Of the 19 riders who remained after Thursday’s endurance phase, only four turned in clean rounds on the stadium-jumping course. One of those was Mara Dupey of South Strafford, Vt., on Hopper, who moved from 12th to sixth with 85.0 penalties.

She finished behind David O’Connor of The Plains, Va., on Custom Made, who had two rails down but wound up fifth with 80.15 penalties.

The two medals ended a 12-year medal drought for the United States, which won the team gold and individual silver in 1984.
