Impact on Upcoming Games

Organizers of the 2000 Sydney Olympics say they will consider creating a giant security zone encompassing all main venues in the wake of the bombing in Atlanta. No cars would be allowed inside the zone, and people would have to ride around on a train system.

It Started as a Routine Call

Tom Davis was just trying to corral a group of drunks. Instead, he was faced with a bomb-packed knapsack. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent was on a routine call to handle the over-excited revelers at a live concert. When he arrived, a security guard pointed him to a new problem: a green knapsack sitting unattended under a nearby bench. He called a bomb diagnostic team and, as other officers joined him, steered people away from the bag. It blew up about 20 minutes after it was first pointed out to him. The scene turned to chaos and horror.

Attendance Near Capacity

Atlanta organizers said Saturday’s attendance was near capacity at the Olympic Stadium. They also said that virtually all staff and volunteers had showed up for work and that all scheduled sports competitions were taking place except for those affected by rain delays.
