Spirited spectators refused to let the day be dreary, and the U.S. tennis team gave them reason to cheer.

Andre Agassi made a narrow escape, Monica Seles won in style and the doubles team of Gigi and Mary Joe Fernandez earned their first victory.

The Fernandezes, who are not related, beat Nathalie Tauziat and Mary Pierce of France, 6-4, 6-3, before a boisterous, flag-waving crowd.

The top-seeded Agassi, facing Italian Andrea Gaudenzi, lost the first set and trailed, 3-0, in the second. But he rallied to win, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, then bowed to the partisan crowd in appreciation of its support.

Seles, also seeded No. 1, swept Gabriela Sabatini, 6-3, 6-3.

In other men’s play, defending champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland was eliminated by Italian Renzo Furlan. Rosset was trailing, 6-0, 4-2, when he quit because of dizziness.
