Council Honors Retired Official
Darrell Essex, who retired recently from his position as city manager, received praise and honors from the City Council this month.
The council awarded him a Community Service Plaque and voted unanimously to have a bronze plaque installed at City Hall commemorating Essex’s 34 years of service as Cypress’ city manager.
Essex, who retired June 30, drew long, loud applause as he approached the microphone to accept the plaque and to give a few remarks.
“I hope I’ve done a little bit for the city,” Essex said. Then, noting that he still resides in Cypress, Essex added, “I’m certainly going to be around. I’ll be in the city, and hopefully I will do some things [as a citizen] that will benefit the city.”
Mayor Walter K. Bowman, in praising Essex, said, “Darrell was here 34 years. He molded the city pretty much into the shape we see it today.”
Essex’s successor, Mark J. Ochenduszko, took office July 1.
