Ekaterina Serebryanskaya of Ukraine dropped a club, but she didn’t drop first place in the rhythmic gymnastics semifinals.

Serebryanskaya, who shares the world champion title with Maria Petrova of Bulgaria, took the lead after her first routine, dancing and twirling effortlessly with the ball and scoring 9.933.

But on her next routine, her right club fell and bounced across the floor. Her 9.583 dropped her to fourth place and allowed Ukrainian teammate Elena Vitrichenko to take the lead.

Serebryanskaya regained the lead with a near-flawless ribbon routine and finished with a spectacular rope routine in which she earned her third perfect mark for composition.

Serebryanskaya finished with 39.332 points. Vitrichenko was second with 39.266.

Scoring starts from scratch in today’s medal round.
