A FLEE MARKET
In the beginning it looked like a carnival. Soon it will resemble a flea market. When the Olympic flame is extinguished, the banners on lamp posts on city streets will come down and the track in the stadium be taken up. And all will be for sale.
The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games plans a Remains of the Game sale for late August. The colorful banners bearing the design of the Olympic torch with the words “Atlanta 1996” and the stylized green leaves of the Atlanta Olympic Games will appear in ACOG souvenir shops.
More than 2,000 ACOG vehicles, all driven by athletes and officials, will go on auction to dealers.
The QVC cable shopping channel will be peddling basketballs autographed by the Dream Team.
The running track must be removed to make way for the Atlanta Braves, who will move into the Olympic Stadium for the 1997 baseball season. Half of the 50,000 square yards of reddish rubber track is being donated by ACOG to Clark Atlanta University. The rest will be cut into pieces of memorabilia to be sold in frames and in Plexiglas desk organizers.
