The United States has made plans to seize Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic in a commando raid, a British newspaper said Sunday, but the British government believes such a move could be counterproductive now.

The Sunday Times, citing intelligence sources in the United States and Britain, said U.S. forces were poised to grab Karadzic in an airborne raid on Pale, the mountain resort in Bosnia-Herzegovina where Serbian hard-liners have their capital.

British Defense Secretary Michael Portillo said military leaders should seriously weigh the fallout of efforts to arrest Karadzic, who has been indicted by the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
