City Seeking Crime Prevention Grant

Share

The city will apply for a $53,400 federal grant to enhance local law enforcement services, City Council members agreed Monday.

And although Simi Valley officials have not yet decided what to do with the money--if they receive it--the city’s Police Department already has a shopping list.

The council voted unanimously late Monday to seek the grant, offered by the U.S. Department of Justice to help local police agencies pay the costs of starting new crime-prevention programs or to buy new equipment.

Although an advisory board and the City Council would have to approve uses for the grant money, the Simi Valley Police Department has the following purchases in mind:

* A SWAT van. The department currently uses an armored vehicle that is not designed to hold emergency equipment.

* An interactive video system for firearms training.

* A vehicle that could serve as a mobile command post during emergencies.

* A van equipped for surveillance operations.

The Department of Justice is expected to award the grants by Sept. 30.
