Harvey Earl Simmons, a Pearl Harbor veteran, died Thursday at his home in Ojai. He was 82.

Born in Illiopolis, Ill., Simmons worked many jobs, including several stints in the military. At different times, Simmons worked as a farmhand, machinist, painter, chauffeur, newspaper salesman, laundry worker, truck driver and aircraft worker.

He joined the Kansas National Guard in 1929, serving in Wichita and Lawrence. He joined the Active Reserve Unit of the Navy in 1931, returning to active duty in 1939. He was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese bombed it on Dec. 7, 1941.

While on leave in 1943, he married Irene Christine Yrigollen. Simmons was discharged in 1944 with several medals and citations after more than 13 years of Navy service.

Simmons then worked for the city of Inglewood as a parking meter supervisor, maintenance man and police officer, until he retired in 1966 and moved to Ojai.

Simmons was a 50-year member and commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dexter R. Simmons, also of Ojai.

Graveside services will be held at Riverside National Cemetery at 3 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.
