Milton Day, a former executive and board member of Times Mirror Co., parent organization of the Los Angeles Times, has died at the age of 83.

Day, who retired from the board in 1983, died Tuesday in Los Angeles.

An expert in accounting, Day began working for Times Mirror in the late 1930s, when The Times and a printing company were its only assets. He rose to a vice presidency of the expanding Times Mirror, and held the titles of controller and then treasurer.

His tenure from the late 1930s to 1978 covered a period of major development as the corporation added newspapers, magazines and printing companies and expanded its reach worldwide. After leaving the active corporate staff, Day was named to the board and served on it for five years.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Whittier.
