And Another Thing . . .

We always read your “Weekend Escape” and finally found one we could use: the Inn on the Beach in Ventura (“Beach and Boardwalk,” June 30). We chose a weekend and got just the kind of room we wanted--king-size bed, smoking, top floor, with refrigerator.

But the bed had the worst mattress we have ever slept on. The room was so small that when we opened the bathroom door a third of the way, it hit the side of the bed. When we arrived the room was hot and stuffy, so we turned on the air conditioner, but it was too loud. When we turned it off, it dripped water on the carpet. There also was an interesting smell in the hallway outside our door, something I might associate with an active teenager’s dirty laundry.

One bright spot: The article turned us on to Duke’s hamburgers, which were really wonderful.
