Podiatrists Accepting Shoes for the Needy

Share

Donations of new or used shoes in good condition are being accepted at podiatrists’ offices across Ventura County this month as part of a statewide effort to provide adequate footwear to those who cannot afford it.

Local residents are being asked to look through their closets for old sneakers, sandals or dress shoes and donate them to the Shoes for the Needy program.

The project is being sponsored by the Doctors of the California Podiatric Medical Assn., which has organized Foot Health Month for the last eight years.

“As podiatrists, we understand how important it is to have . . . good-fitting shoes,” said Dr. Clive Salmon, DPM, a Ventura podiatrist. “The needy people of the community need to be provided with preventive care.”

Shoes that fit comfortably and keep feet dry and warm are necessary for healthy feet.

People who are not able to buy good shoes become vulnerable to infection and injury, Salmon said.

Children’s shoes, sports shoes, dress shoes for work or job interviews are especially needed. Participants in the program are also encouraged to donate socks.

At the end of the month, the donated shoes will be gathered together and distributed by a local charity.
