Presidential Support Plane Crashes in Wyoming
A military jet detailed to provide support for President Clinton crashed late Saturday outside Jackson Hole, Wyo., where Clinton had been vacationing, the Pentagon said.
The plane was a C-130, Pentagon spokeswoman Karen Jeffries said. Cable News Network reported that the plane came from an Air National Guard unit based in Abilene, Texas.
Mark la Polla, a Jackson Hole resident, said he saw the plane take off and head north. It banked east, which was unusual, La Polla said, because most planes bank west toward the Grand Teton mountains.
La Polla said he later saw flames and learned that the plane had crashed onto a mountain outcropping called Sleeping Indian.
The crash site is in a remote location, he said. La Polla said he had heard on a radio scanner that the C-130 had a crew of seven aboard.
Clinton returned to Washington early today.
