Opening day sales at the Camarillo Target store exceeded management expectations by 50%, officials said.

The 120,000-square-foot store, which opened July 28, is one of 37 stores opened last month by parent company Dayton Hudson of Minneapolis, Minn.

The Camarillo Target is the first store to open in the 40-acre Camarillo Town Center, at the southwest corner of Las Posas Road and the Ventura Freeway. Additional tenants slated to open in coming months include Oshman’s Super Sports, Ross Dress for Less, Staples, Petco and several restaurants.

Negotiations are underway with a national bookstore chain and a domestics retailer.

“The area’s strong household income, growing population and high traffic counts make this site very attractive to retailers,” said Reed Henkelman of CB Commercial Real Estate Group of Ventura, the project’s leasing agent.

The Town Center is owned by CEP Investors II of San Francisco.
