A former IBM executive and community activist living in Oxnard has been appointed executive director of the Ventura County branch of Habitat for Humanity.

Ken Pyburn, 58, who has served as interim director of the organization since July, following the resignation of Virgil Nelson, will now officially lead the nonprofit group, which has built six homes in the county for low-income residents since 1994.

“I’m looking forward to building on the foundation started by Virgil,” Pyburn said.

“I want to be sure we are equipped to become a significant builder in Ventura County of housing for low-income people.”

Since the organization was founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity volunteers have built more than 40,000 homes worldwide for people who otherwise could not afford them. Ventura County became the state’s first affiliate of the organization in 1983.

Local organizers of Habitat for Humanity plan to eventually build seven to 10 low-income homes in Ventura County each year.

The organization has built four homes in the county since January and will complete two more by year’s end.
