Oxnard officials are talking trash and giddy with excitement.

With the $25-million Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station scheduled to begin processing trash Monday, a new chapter will open in trash collection and recycling for the city.

“This is a state-of-the-art facility,” said Ruben Mesa with the city’s refuse department. “We are very excited.”

On Tuesday, the City Council gave final approval to establishing user fees at the high-tech facility, ranging from $33 to $36 a ton. Although the trash facility will open for business Monday, the recycling facility will not be completed until October, said Cynthia Daniels of the city’s refuse division. The recycling facility will help the city reach its goal of recycling 50% of its waste by 2000.

With the closure of Bailard Landfill on Saturday, city officials say the Del Norte facility will usher in a new era of environmentally sound trash and recycling pick up.
