Philadelphia Phillie Manager Jim Fregosi denied a report that he has talked to Angel executives about returning to manage the club, which he led to the AL West title in 1979.

ESPN reported that Fregosi had lunch Monday with Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi, but the meeting never took place because Bavasi was with the club in New York.

“I’m under contract to manage the Phillies,” said Fregosi, who has a year and an option remaining on his contract. “I have not had any discussions with anybody about any other employment.

“The Angels have always been close to me. I’ve always been close to [Angel owner] Gene Autry. It’s an outstanding organization.”
