McNamara Considers Not Returning

Angel Manager John McNamara, who spent his third day in a New York hospital because of a blood clot in his right calf, said Friday that “everything was fine,” but he expressed some doubt about returning to the team.

“I have to wait and see what the doctors say,” McNamara, 64, said. “Heck, the way [interim manager] Joe Maddon is going, they might not want me back.”

Maddon improved to 3-0 in McNamara’s absence with Friday night’s 2-0 victory over the Orioles. General Manager Bill Bavasi, in Baltimore with the team, said he won’t make a decision until he has more information about McNamara’s condition.

“The people who will decide are John and his doctors,” Bavasi said. “His health definitely comes first. Everything else is a distant second.”

McNamara, who was awaiting the results of further tests Friday night, said the swelling in his foot, ankle and calf has gone down considerably since he was admitted to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital Wednesday.

“The big thing is they’re trying to determine what caused the clot,” McNamara said. “I had a physical [before accepting the Angel job Aug. 6] and everything checked out fine, so they’re not sure what changed since then.”
