CANYON DE CHELLY: 100 Years of Painting and Photography by Donald J. Hagerty (Gibbs-Smith: $19.95, 120 pp., paperback original). Since its acquisition by the United States in 1849, Canyon de Chelly has challenged artists to capture the beauty of its red sandstone walls. Artists have responded to that challenge in a variety of media: photographs, oils, acrylics, pencil, ink, prints. These striking images make it easy to understand why the Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northwestern Arizona attracts over a million visitors annually. Hagerty’s text is more intelligent than the fluff in many photo books. It is a promising debut for Gibbs-Smith’s “Places of Spirit” series.
