WWII-Era Aircraft to Be Showcased

World War II-era airplanes will be on display over the Labor Day weekend as the Southern California Wing of the Confederate Air Force holds its annual open house at Camarillo Airport.

The Lockheed P-38L Lightning fighter promises to be the star of this year’s show, group spokeswoman Pat Brown said. Group members will be doing maintenance on the popular air show performer, readying it for upcoming Reno Air Races.

During the wing’s open house, which starts Saturday and runs through Monday, members will hold tours of the China Doll, a huge 1942 C-46 transport plane. An F8F Bearcat, B-25J Mitchell bomber and SNJ Navy Trainer will also be on display.

The indoor World War II museum display will also be open for viewing, Brown said. All of the planes are expected to stay grounded during the three-day open house. But Brown said the pilots sometimes change their minds and decide to take their aircraft out for a spin.

“I don’t think anyone will be flying over the weekend, but you never know,” she said.

The open house will be held each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
