City Funds Repairs for Seniors Home

The city has agreed to provide $30,000 for upgrades to a three-bedroom home that will be used as temporary housing for senior citizens who suddenly find themselves homeless.

The house, at 7372 Wyoming St., was purchased by the city’s Redevelopment Agency in 1984 and has been vacant since.

The property is being leased for $1 a month to the nonprofit Asian American Senior Citizens Assn., which will operate a transitional housing program there once the repairs are complete.

“Structurally, it’s in very good condition,” said Don Anderson, the city’s community development director. Recently, the house received a new roof through donated materials and labor.

Volunteers will do much of the remaining work, officials said, such as painting, landscaping and some small repairs. Major repairs, however, such as new carpeting and electrical wiring, must be done by contractors.

The funding for the project, which was approved by a unanimous City Council vote Tuesday, will come from the city’s federal Community Development Block Grants, a budget of about $90,000 this year.

When repairs are finished, the senior association will operate a transitional living center for senior citizens in temporary need.
