They Get to Go From Gang Turf to Sun and Surf

A group of youngsters in a city-sponsored gang-prevention program were rewarded for their diligence with two days of sun and surf this week, plus recognition from law enforcement officers and city officials.

Community Services Program Inc., a joint effort of San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point, works with schools, community groups and law enforcement agencies to prevent gang violence and drug abuse among youth. About 300 children 9 to 17 years old are enrolled.

The 30 youngsters chosen to take part in a summer camp Wednesday and Thursday at San Onofre State Beach were honored for having maintained good grades, a positive attitude and anti-gang activities throughout the year, officials said.

“Most of these kids live in gang areas,” said Jesse Gutierrez, a counselor for CSP, which also offers peer support groups, one-on-one and family counseling, school tutoring and job skills training.

“Some of them have older siblings who are involved in gangs and drugs, but these kids in CSP have overcome that,” Gutierrez said.

At the two-day camp, the honorees swam, surfed and played games on the beach. Coaches from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana volunteered to teach sessions on soccer, volleyball and basketball. The youngsters also received certificates of recognition as camp ended Thursday.

Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Willie Moreno, who heads a community policing task force in San Clemente, took time out to visit the camp and congratulate the children.

With the help of CSP, his officers have developed the trust of at-risk youth in the community, he said.

“This is a great program,” Moreno said. “I don’t think people realize the resource they have in CSP. They do so much.”

Between camp activities, the young participants reflected on how the program has helped them.

“It keeps me motivated to do things,” said 14-year-old Maria Garcia of San Clemente, who joined CSP with a friend. Besides, she said, “the program’s really fun.”
