Sandra Gladstone; Longtime Civil Rights Activist

Sandra Gladstone, 83, civil rights activist who helped win landmark legal decisions. In 1991, Gladstone received the Rosa Parks Award from the Southern California Americans for Democratic Action for her lifelong work on social issues. Born in Ukraine, she came to the United States as a young child and grew up in Seneca, S.C. She dedicated her life to ending segregation and was active in many of the national protest marches including the one at Selma, Ala. Often jailed for her activism, she was most recently incarcerated in 1990 at age 77 for protesting U.S. aid to El Salvador. She moved to Hollywood when she was 17 and was involved in two key legal decisions involving civil rights: One established that union members could continue to accumulate benefits while on strike, and the other allowed broadcasting political messages from a sound truck.
