Taking Another Look at Lookers

Share

I’m feeling pretty defeated after reading Zan Dubin’s review of Lookers nightclub (“Lookers Is a Hoot, If You Don’t Take Equality Too Seriously,” OC Live!, Aug. 22).

Does Dubin realize that people who truly believe in equality don’t casually switch off their convictions in order to enjoy a night of exploitative entertainment, and that “feminism’s-no-fun” attitudes like hers are as great a threat to women’s autonomy as anything Newt Gingrich could propose?

If the line “But hey, if you missed the women’s movement, slept through that class or just don’t care, this bar’s for you” is intended to be humorous, perhaps Dubin and her editors should ask themselves whether that sentence would have made it into print if the words “women’s movement” were replaced with “civil rights movement.”

Equality isn’t an issue on which any of us ought to be expected to “lighten up”--especially while establishments like Lookers are still serving up all-you-can-ogle women’s bodies right along with the all-you-can-eat buffalo wings.
