Jarrett Positioned for Bonus Run After Winning Southern 500 Pole

Dale Jarrett, who will be trying to win a $1-million bonus in Sunday’s Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, got off to a good start Friday by qualifying on the pole in his Ford Thunderbird at 170.934 mph.

Jarrett is eligible for the Winston Select Million after winning two of four designated races earlier in the year at Daytona and Charlotte. Only Bill Elliott, in 1985, won three of the four and collected the bonus.

Jeff Gordon, defending Winston Cup champion and winner of the TransSouth 400 at Darlington last March, qualified alongside Jarrett in a Chevrolet at 170.833.
