Company 401(k) plans, which now hold about $670 billion nationwide, have grown at a 20.5% annual rate the last 10 years. About 35% of companies say the 401(k) is the primary retirement income plan for their employees. In 88% of cases, employers offer some kind of match to workers’ contributions. Formulas vary, but most commonly, employers kick in 50 cents for every dollar contributed by workers.
