Outfielder Clark Acquired From Pirates

The Dodgers acquired left fielder Dave Clark from the Pittsburgh Pirates before the midnight deadline when playoff rosters were required to be submitted.

The Dodgers sent reliever Carl South of Class-A Savannah to the Pirates. They made room for Clark on the roster by releasing outfielder Rick Parker, who officially is designated for assignment.

The Dodgers’ first target was outfielder Jim Eisenreich of the Phillies, according to sources. The Phillies wanted outfielder Roger Cedeno in return, and the Dodgers refused to part with him.

“He’s a player who I think will help us upgrade our situation down the stretch and postseason,” Fred Claire, Dodger vice president, said of Clark. “I’ve always liked him. He’s always been a productive player. He gives us power off the bench, and two left-handers on the bench when [Wayne] Kirby starts.”

Clark, eligible for free agency after the season, is batting .275 with eight homers and 35 RBIs in 92 games. He has started 24 games in left field and 21 games in right, and is batting .306 as a pinch-hitter with a homer and six RBIs. The Dodgers will have to pay Clark only $120,833 of his $725,000 salary.

“I have mixed emotions,” said Clark, who is scheduled to be in uniform today. “I won’t say I’m happy about leaving, but I’m looking forward to better things.

” We weren’t doing anything here. Now I’ve been given a chance to be with a contender.”

The Dodgers will call up eight players today from the minor leagues: shortstop/second baseman Wilton Guerrero, utilityman Chad Fonville, third baseman Mike Busch, infielder Oreste Marrero, catcher Ken Huckaby, and pitchers Jim Bruske, Jesus Martinez and Felix Rodriguez.

The most surprising omission was Cedeno, but Claire said that he may call up a few more players after triple-A Albuquerque’s season ends Tuesday.

Tom Lasorda was honored during a 15-minute ceremony at Veterans Stadium before the game. The scoreboard also showed highlights of Lasorda throughout the game. Lasorda, who is from nearby Norristown, Pa., brought his four brothers on the field with him. He received crystal and a portrait of himself.
