The Cayman Islands government has bought an abandoned Russian destroyer that will be towed from Cuba, scuttled off Cayman Brac island and used as a scuba diving attraction.
The British territory in the western Caribbean paid about $275,000 for the conventionally powered 330-foot destroyer, which was built in 1983, Tourism Minister Thomas Jefferson said. The vessel had been mothballed at an abandoned Russian naval base in Cuba.
Sunken ships function as artificial reefs, attracting marine life.
