Principals Bring Experience, Ideas to New Academic Year
For Ivy Morritt, becoming the principal of Vintage Math, Science and Technology Magnet School in North Hills is just a slight change of scenery. The veteran educator previously served as assistant principal at Telfair Elementary School in Pacoima and has been teaching and working in the San Fernando Valley since 1977.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Morritt received a bachelor’s degree in elementary school education and art from Hunter College in New York. She later received master’s degrees in education from Brooklyn College and educational administration from Cal State Northridge.
She got her first teaching job at El Dorado Avenue Elementary School in Sylmar, drawn to the Valley because “it seemed like a good place to live and bring up a family,” she said.
At Vintage, which has 780 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, Morritt hopes to improve academic achievement in the 2-year-old magnet program.
“There are some wonderful children in the Valley,” she said. “There are a lot of good things going on here.”
