A 23-year-old Panorama City man has been sentenced to 225 days in jail for beating his girlfriend after she angered him by telling her daughter to wash the dishes, the city attorney said.

Daniel Mass was sentenced by Van Nuys Municipal Judge Michelle Rosenblatt Tuesday after entering a no contest plea to one count of spousal battery.

Mass, who had been in custody since his arrest July 31, was ordered to begin serving his sentence immediately.

On July 31, according to a written statement from the city attorney’s office, Van Nuys Division LAPD officers traced an open 911 line to the Panorama City apartment Mass shared with the unnamed victim, a 28-year-old woman.

The woman, who according to police was visibly upset when officers arrived, told the officers that she dialed 911 after Mass attacked her but was too frightened to complete the call.

The victim said Mass became angry when she told her daughter to wash the dishes.

He accused her, she said, of “trying to show off in front of my home boys,” a reference to two friends who were at the apartment at the time, the city attorney said.

The victim, who suffered minor injuries to her knee and eye, also reported that Mass choked her and punched her in the stomach during the assault, according to authorities.

Spokesman Mike Qualls said the prosecution of Mass indicated the city attorney office’s “zero drop policy” on domestic violence cases in the city.

“These are violent crimes and we’re treating them as such,” Qualls said.
