Community Groups Get Set to Garden

Residents near Carver Elementary School are hoping to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables on a vacant lot where prostitutes and drug dealers once lingered.
Project organizer Radon Lopez said that residents expect to begin planting the Carver Community Garden Project in early 1997.
The lot is owned by the city of Santa Ana, which agreed to lease the land to local community groups and the school for one year for $1, said Lopez, a coordinator with the Project Sabado community group.
A number of groups worked to establish the garden, including Carver Concerned Parents and Carver Elementary School. The 800-square- foot lot near downtown is cleared, and about 24 plots will be available.
In addition to community members, Lopez said, students from Carver Elementary will use the garden as part of their science classes.
