Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Juan Guzman, the American League earned-run average leader, had an appendectomy Saturday and probably will be sidelined the rest of the season.
Guzman, 29, underwent surgery Saturday afternoon and is expected to be released from the hospital today or Monday. Paul Quantrill took over his scheduled start.
The right-hander was 11-8 with a 2.93 ERA in 27 starts and 165 strikeouts in 187 2/3 innings. Opponents were batting only .228 against Guzman, the lowest average against any qualifying pitcher in the AL this year.
