Lockyer to Address Jewish Committee

State Sen. Bill Lockyer (D-Hayward) will discuss the growing influence of the Religious Right as well as the failed Boland bill at a meeting Wednesday of the Jewish Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation Valley Alliance.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Paula Boland (R-Granada Hills), would have made it easier for the San Fernando Valley to secede from Los Angeles.

The Senate president pro tem will be the keynote speaker at the panel’s meeting, which will honor outgoing JCRC co-chairs Mark and Marsha Novak and welcome incoming Chairman Donald Goor, senior rabbi-elect at Temple Judea in Tarzana.

Lockyer’s address will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Bernard Milken Jewish Community Campus, 22622 Vanowen St., West Hills.

The senator’s presentation will include a discussion of his proposed Guaranteed Educational Quality Act, which focuses on improving the scores of the state’s lowest student performers.

The JCRC was established to develop policies of social welfare and foster national debate expressing the interests of the local Jewish community. It consists of professional staff and lay volunteers. The meeting is open to the public. Admission $5. For details, call (818) 587-3219.
