A story frozen in time:

Emmy host Paul Reiser noted that two networks--Westinghouse’s CBS and General Electric’s NBC--are owned by companies that sell freezers. And a third network--Disney’s ABC--is owned by a company “whose founder is in a freezer.”

It’s the urban folk tale that won’t die.

Walt Disney, who died in 1966, was rumored to have had his body frozen with the hope that it could be resuscitated at a later time. But the truth is, he was cremated and his remains were interred at Forest Lawn in Glendale.

In debunking the myth, the authors of the book, “Rumor,” speculated it may have originated because there was a coincidental flurry of stories about cryonics--the body-freezing movement--at the time of Disney’s death.

And the folk tale was assured a long life in 1993 when millions of viewers heard Oscars host Billy Crystal say that the formation of the Mighty Ducks hockey team was a surprise to him. Until that time, he explained, “the only Disney on ice was Walt.”

A NURSERY RHYME COME TRUE: Remember the children’s tale about the old lady who lived in a shoe? Dean Edwards of Sherman Oaks found what could be a real-life version in Van Nuys.

DINING MILESTONES: V. Cooper of North Hollywood came upon an announcement about a revolutionary approach to restaurant fare. We hope it catches on.

miscelLAny:

Of all the clips from the “Dennis Miller Live” show that could have been shown at the Emmys, the producers had to pick the one where the comic says that the starting gun for the last L.A. Marathon--in keeping with the city’s reputation--was an Uzi. Perhaps “clip” was an inappropriate word for us to use.
