West Hollywood Council Votes to Fire Longtime City Manager

The West Hollywood City Council has fired its first and only city manager, Paul Brotzman, ending a 12-year-relationship that some say had soured in recent years because of Brotzman’s assertiveness.

The City Council decided in a closed-door session Monday night to terminate the contract.

Council members would not discuss the reasons behind the decision, which was announced Tuesday. But those familiar with the city said that Brotzman--who had long enjoyed support from a council majority--lost key backing 2 1/2 years ago when city elections changed the makeup of the council.

Mayor Paul Koretz and council members Steve Martin and Sal Guarriello voted to end Brotzman’s contract. Council members Abbe Land and John Heilman voted against the action.
