Development Plans Lead City Agenda

Setting their priorities for coming years, city leaders this week urged action on a variety of projects, including a proposed ordinance that would ensure residents’ right to a view.

At the top of the priority list, however, was redevelopment of Treasure Island Mobilehome Park, a project on hold while the property owners evaluate their options.

Another key project emphasized was redevelopment of the high-profile corner of Laguna Canyon Road and Forest Avenue, dubbed the Village Entrance because it marks the beginning of the downtown business district.

City Council members also urged Planning Commissioners at Tuesday’s planning session to press ahead with their review of plans for development in the downtown business area and the Diamond Crestview neighborhood.

Council members applauded a recently proposed view preservation ordinance, which would set guidelines for neighbors to follow when they are faced with a dispute over a view.

The proposal has sparked controversy, with tree proponents grumbling because the proposal would not give equal weight to tree preservation and view proponents complaining that it would not be tough enough.

The proposal, which is not likely to face a council vote for months yet, will be fine-tuned in coming meetings, the next of which is set for Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room A in City Hall.

Residents may sent suggestions on the view ordinance and other issues related to long-term goals for the city to Mayor Wayne Peterson at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach, CA 92651.
