Janitors Protest Hiring of Nonunion Company
Members of a janitors’ union demonstrated outside a Miracle Mile office complex Friday to protest the building owner’s hiring of a nonunion maintenance company.
About two hundred janitors and their families rallied in front of the Mutual Benefit building at 5900 Wilshire Blvd. American Building Maintenance had employed 10 janitors who are members of the Service Employees International Union.
The company was replaced by Skyline Maintenance in August. Sidney Moray, the building’s owner, said the change was made because he was dissatisfied with the janitors’ work.
But union officials charged that Moray simply wanted to pay janitors less money. Moray said the new janitors are being paid at union scale.
Some office workers applauded the marchers.
“I just want another job,” said fired worker Mercedes Ramirez, 46, a 20-year building employee.
