A 19-year-old man was shot to death and five people were locked inside a refrigerator during a botched robbery at a McDonald’s on the Naval Amphibious Base, police said Saturday.

The man, who died at the scene, was believed to be one of five robbers who entered the restaurant about 10:40 p.m. Friday, police said. He was shot by one of his accomplices when the robbery went awry, authorities said.

Police on Saturday were looking for the other robbers who fled after locking five people in the restaurant’s walk-in refrigerator. They were rescued by police and not harmed.

Police did not say whether any money was taken from the restaurant.

It is not clear whether the dead man or the other suspects are Navy personnel. Navy officials did not return telephone calls Saturday seeking comment, and a duty officer refused to page a base spokesman. Coronado police declined to comment beyond a four-paragraph release.
