Council to Discuss Lagoon’s Water Level

The issue of Ormond Beach and flooding will again be addressed tonight by the Oxnard City Council.

For the last two months, business owners near the lagoon at Ormond Beach have expressed concern about high water levels and the possibility of flooding if there is rain.

City officials will consider today sending a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers in support of reducing the lagoon’s water level by two feet.

The federal agency is scheduled to make a decision on lowering the water level by next month in response to a permit request by Ventura County flood control officials. Several business and property owners in the area, as well as officials at the state Fish and Game Department, have asked the county’s flood control district to request a permit to reduce the water level.

On Monday, attorneys for Willamette Industries, the operator of an industrial paper mill in south Oxnard, adjacent to the wetlands, filed suit against the flood control district.

Saying that the district has “not acted properly, quickly enough or within its power to relieve local businesses and landowners of the flooding problem,” attorneys for the paper mill said they hope the suit will “motivate the county to solve the problem faster.”

Flood control officials could not be reached for comment late Monday.
