Thousands of soldiers and police searched rugged border mountains today for suspected North Korean infiltrators who abandoned a submarine off South Korea’s east coast.

All army units and militia forces in the area were put on alert.

“This is a clear violation of the armistice,” said Lt. Gen. Kim Dong Sin, who directed the search.

The submarine was found on a reef off Kangnung, 90 miles east of Seoul. Footprints indicated about 10 North Koreans had come ashore, Gen. Chung Hwa Un said.

Chung said it was unclear whether the submarine was trying to land spies or merely became stranded during training.
